Originally from the Eastern Townships
(Quebec), Mr. Doran started working at the River Institute in late
1999. He graduated from McGill university with a B.Sc. in
Environmental Biology and a M.Sc. in Aquatic Entomology. With his
knowledge of invertebrates, particularly benthos and aquatic
insects, he is the “bug guy” at the River Institute.
He works on a variety of research projects such
zebra mussel monitoring programs and wetland biodiversity projects.
In conjunction with the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, he currently
coordinates and supervises the Mosquito Monitoring Program for
Eastern Ontario to monitor the spread of West Nile virus in local
mosquito populations.
His microbiology background also allows him to
work in the River Institute’s laboratory where he participates in
the analytical and microbiological analyses of environmental
samples. He is also the Quality Assurance and Quality Control
officer ensuring that all laboratory practices fall within
accreditation (CAEAL) standards.
Mr. Doran also delivers educational programs
(Cooper Marsh programs) to elementary and high school students and
to local community groups. In addition, he lectures at a local
community college (St. Lawrence College) where he teaches general
biology, microbiology and limnology.
