The River Institute and the Cornwall and District Environment Committee
are leading a new project called the Cornwall Waterfront GRAB
(Garbage Removal for Area Beautification). The project has several
goals. One is to develop a sustainable annual event to remove garbage
and thereby enhance the Cornwall waterfront. The other component of the
project is to promote a greater understanding within the community of
the unique flora and fauna that inhabit river shorelines and near-shore
habitats.
The clean-up events will take place in April (during Earth Month)
and in September (during the
Great Canadian Shoreline
Cleanup week). Time commitments are
flexible: participants can do clean-ups at any time during the clean-up
weeks, and the clean-ups can be as short as a lunch hour, or as long as
an afternoon. It’s best if groups who would like to do a clean-up get
in touch with the coordinator ahead of time to avoid having several
groups beautify the same location.
The GRAB program will focus on cleaning up the St. Lawrence River waterfront,
approximately from the R.H.
Saunders Power Dam to
Gray’s
Creek. Many different groups, organizations, and the public at
large are invited to take part in the litter clean-up project.
Several groups already do litter clean-ups, and this project will
bring together all these groups and allow us to recognize our
combined achievement. Additional clubs are invited to take part in
this initiative to improve our community and to inspire others to do
the same.
This projects was initiated by the River Institute and
Cornwall and District Environment Committee and received start up
funding from The Ontario Trillium Foundation.
