Remedial Action Plan

 A free public lecture (pdf)

On February 7, 2007 at 7 pm,

will be given at the Cornwall Public Library to explain the Remedial Action Plan and its progress. Katherine Beehler, from the Raisin Region Conservation Authority, will explain the environmental concerns that were identified in our area, and the projects and activities that have been ongoing to restore our aquatic ecosystem. In addition, Jim Hendry, from the S D & G Stewardship Council, will talk about the unique characteristics of old growth forests and how they affect the health of aquatic ecosystems here in S D &G.

What is the Remedial Action Plan (RAP)?

The Great Lakes Remedial Action Plan (RAP) was created as part of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement between Canada and the United States. The basis of the plan is to stop pollution from entering specific areas of concern around the lakes, including the St. Lawrence River. Locally, an “ecosystem approach” is applied in the restoration and protection of environmentally degraded areas. In order to oversee the implementation of the Remedial Action Plan for the Cornwall area, the St. Lawrence River Restoration Council (SLRRC) was formed. This Restoration Council is made up of approximately thirty members who represent government, localindustry, the City of Cornwall, environmental groups, small business, and the general public.

As a member of the SLRRC, the St. Lawrence River Institute has been involved in many research and monitoring projects identified by the Remedial Action Plan. In 2005, one of the River Institute’s contributions was to prepare Volume 4 of the bilingual newsletter, The St. Lawrence RAP Update. This newsletter is published and distributed to keep community members aware of pertinent research being conducted in the area. In addition, a visual display about the Remedial Action Plan was exhibited in many public areas throughoutthe community in order to increase community awareness about the Remedial Action Plan.
