details
The Great Lakes Remedial Action Plan (RAP) was created as part of
the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement between Canada and the
United States. The basis of the plan is to stop pollution from
entering specific areas of concern around the lakes, including the
St. Lawrence River. Locally, an “ecosystem approach” is applied in
the restoration and protection of environmentally degraded areas. In
order to oversee the implementation of the Remedial Action Plan for
the Cornwall area, the St. Lawrence River Restoration Council (SLRRC)
was formed. This Restoration Council is made up of approximately
thirty members who represent government, local industry, the City of
Cornwall, environmental groups, small business, and the general
public.
As a member of the SLRRC, the St. Lawrence River Institute has been
involved in many research and monitoring projects identified by the
Remedial Action Plan. In 2005, one of the River Institute’s
contributions was to prepare Volume 4 of the bilingual newsletter,
The St. Lawrence RAP Update. This newsletter is published and
distributed to keep community members aware of pertinent research
being conducted in the area. In addition, a visual display about the
Remedial Action Plan was exhibited in many public areas
throughout the community in order to increase community awareness
about the Remedial Action Plan.
