More research is
needed to address source water odour caused by the growing number of organic
contaminants from industrial, agricultural or municipal waste systems, and
generated in water treatment plants themselves (e.g. via treatment
malfunction, filter bleed and biological growth, chlorination and
disinfection by-products) and distribution networks (e.g. via biofilm growth, and surface corrosion, permeation and
chemical degradation). Furthermore, the long-term health and socio-economic
effects of many organoleptics, their derivatives and by-products are still
poorly understood, while the development, improvement and evaluation of new and
existing treatment processes, such as advanced oxidation and membrane treatment
are essential, for application in both large and small communities. It is also
necessary to consider odours generated during the manufacture and storage of
bottled water, and off-flavours generated in fish and other foodstuffs affected
by contact with odour-producing biota or tainted source-water.
