The St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences delivers environmental education programs to students of all ages.  Our hands-on programs are designed to meet with the Life System Strand of the Ontario Educational Curriculum.  Enjoy a great day outside and check off some of this year’s learning objectives at the same time!  The programs are flexible and can be modified to meet the students’ and the teachers’ needs.

L’Institut des sciences environnementales du fleuve Saint-Laurent offre des programmes éducatifs  pour les élèves de tout niveaux.  Nos programmes interactifs rencontrent les normes exigées par le Ministère de l’éducation de l'Ontario (Domaine d'étude: Sustèmes vivants).  Passez une belle journée dehors avec les naturalistes tout en apprenant la biologie et l’écologie.  Veuillez noter que les programmes sont très flexibles et peuvent être modifiés au besoin des élèves et des enseignant(e)s.

Eastern Ontario Children's Water Festival
(Grade 4)

The Eastern Ontario Children’s Water Festival is a bilingual, full day
environmental education program for grade 4 students
 that aims to educate about the value and fragility of our water
resources
.  Over 4000 participants every year benefit from
this innovative program, which is presented in partnership with area

high schools, community groups, municipalities and
environmental organizations.
A curriculum-linked program geared toward school groups,
the festival is a great way for kids to splash their way to a better appreciation for
one of our most precious resources: water!

Environmental Science Investigator / Investigator scientifique de l'environnement
(Grade 9 - 12) Offered at the River Institute in Cornwall, ON
 


Offered September - June

The Environmental Science Investigator program

is a NEW hands-on interactive learning experience where high school students participate in environmental research programs that are taking place at the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences.

During this program, students will learn about the various sampling and analytical
techniques that scientists use for their research. Under the supervision of River
Institute scientists, students will collect and analyze

environmental samples using state-of the-art scientific equipment. The main objective of the Environmental Science Investigator program is to provide a unique learning opportunity for
students to interact with researchers and explore the growing field of environmental science.
 The Environmental Science Investigator program will allow students to investigate various
aspects of their environment. The program is divided into the following 5 themes.

 ENVIROTHON - Competition for Intermediate & High Schools


Envirothon is an interactive environmental education program for youth from grades
9 to 12. This program is delivered through field trips, resource materials and
competitions within the region. Regional competitions take place throughout the
school year, with the Provincial Envirothon Competition taking place in spring.
All material is tailored to fit the Ontario curriculum and Ontario specific
activities and scientific information. The Envirothon promotes teamwork,
critical thinking and problem solving skills for participants.

Eco-Friends Summer Day Camps                       Location:  Cooper Marsh Conservation Area


Offered July and August

All camp sessions will include activities such as hiking, frog
catching, pond dipping, games, crafts, skits, scientific experiments and much, much more!  The St. Lawrence River Institute of
Environmental Sciences has run the Eco-Friends Summer
Day Camps since 1997. These camps challenge participants
to learn about the science underlying their natural environment
in a hands-on, minds-on way

Summer Youth Internship program


The Summer Youth Internship program was initiated in the summer of 2008 to provide
guidance and work experience for teenagers considering post-secondary studies in science.
 The program was designed to provide opportunity for young people to become engaged
and active in scientific work by working side by side with research scientists and university
students.  In 2008, four summer interns took part in this dynamic program. Contact

University/College


The River Institute presents several avenues for post-secondary students to gain valuable field experience by pursuing their studies with us. River Institute scientists teach a number of Environmental Technician Diploma courses and laboratory/field sessions in conjunction with St. Lawrence College (Cornwall Campus). They also provide university students with an opportunity to study environmental challenges through a Methods in Ecotoxicology field course, offered in partnership with Queen’s University and the University of Ottawa. Research scientists at the River Institute supervise graduate students as well
