The St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences, in partnership with the Queen’s University’s Centre for Water and the Environment and Conservation Ontario, held the 12th Annual International Conference on the St. Lawrence River / Great Lakes Ecosystems.

Source water is defined as water from streams, rivers, lakes, or underground aquifers used to supply private wells and public drinking water. Our present challenge, and the challenge of future generations, is to keep these essential drinking water sources in sufficient supply and free of contaminants. From the latest in research advances to the responsibilities of agencies and governments, this year’s conference provided a platform to discuss and explore what must be done to protect these sources.

11th Annual International Conference on the St. Lawrence River Ecosystem/ Great Lakes
Managing our Waters:  The impacts of water level changes: past, present and future.

May 18-20, 2004 NavCanada Conference Centre, Cornwall, Ontario, Canada
The theme "Managing Our Waters: The Great Lakes/St. Lawrence River" seeks to highlight research which addresses the challenges of managing water levels and explores the various impacts on the system resulting from water level changes. The theme also highlights the inherent connectivity between the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River. Water level control is a striking example of this connectivity, since the major water control structures at Cornwall are used to regulate Lake Ontario and upper St. Lawrence water levels.

6th An International Conference on the St. Lawrence River Ecosystem
Sharing Knowledge, Linking Sciences: Transitions in the St. Lawrence River.

April 26-28, 1999, NavCanada Conference Centre, Cornwall, Ontario, Canada
The conference will integrate disciplines and focus on research and information which characterizes transition zones in the Lawrence River/Lake Ontario/Ottawa River and the Estuary. Transitions zones are areas of great scientific, economic and cultural importance. They include the transition from Lake Ontario to the Upper St Lawrence River, the transitions from wetland to river and river/tributary confluences and the St. Lawrence River estuary. Transitions areas include the forest-water, land-water, air-water and sediment-water and fresh vs salt-waters interfaces.
