The St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences was conceived and built on a foundation of research and education. Research continues to be the driving force of the River Institute, from which educational programs and community activities evolve. A new research facility and accredited laboratory located on the banks of the St. Lawrence River attract visiting scientists from around the globe. State-of-the-art analytical equipment allows for innovative and progressive research options. The research scientists, projects, and outcomes from the River  Institute have solidified its reputation as a quality institution in the world of environmental and ecological research.

The River Institute conducts research that:

  • contributes to the scientific foundation of how large river ecosystems, and their components, function
     

  • helps define, analyze, solve and prevent environmental problems using interdisciplinary approaches
     

  • addresses local, national and international needs
     

  • describes the impact of humans on the ecosystem
     

  • supports the development of environmentally friendly technologies
     

  • fosters innovation and economic development
     

  • develops expertise in related emerging issues such as health, climate change and renewable energy
